The LAN Support Group Introduces New Version of BindView+
NetWare Report Generator Offers Ability
to Customize Management Reports
-----------------------------------------------------------------
HOUSTON, September, 1991--In a move to alleviate LAN
management, security, and documentation problems, The LAN
Support Group, a leading provider of LAN utilities, has
announced the release of BindView+ v3.0c, the first query-
by-example report generator for professional NetWare System
Managers, CNEs, and EDP auditors.
"About a year ago we realized that what our customers
needed was a new kind of information retrieval tool for
NetWare LAN information," said Eric Pulaski, president of
The LAN Support Group. "To be effective, a system manager
must act to prevent problems before they occur. This means
having quick access to a wide variety of information from
one command console. We now finally have what we were after,
a new type of management reporting tool that allows a single
system manager to analyze file servers in ways that would
previously have taken a team of analysts weeks to complete."
BindView+ is the first report generator for NetWare LANs
that allows system managers to define and customize their
own reports. For example, a user could design a simple
report that would list all users whose disk space in use is
greater than 10MB. More complex reports can be designed
using multiple criteria combined with boolean logic. For
example, a report could list all users who are SUPERVISOR-
equivalent and either don't have a password or have a
password that is unsecure. (The system manager can define
what "unsecure" means.) Until now, users have not had this
kind of flexibility, but have had to rely on "canned"
reports.
"BindView+ is the only product I've seen that gives you
the flexibility you need as a network manager," said Greg
Cobert, manager of office automation for the Security
Exchange Commission. "We're a small group managing a large
number of users and BindView provides documentation on our
NetWare servers in a way that allows me to create reports
for my specific needs. I also use the product as a fail-safe
backup system. If I had to, I could reconstruct a server
from paper using the reports I've generated with BindView."
In addition to BindView+ being a true report generator,
it is also unique in the large volume of information that
can be provided, including information about the file server
configuration, user accounts, user groups, print queues,
print servers, and file and directory information. Users can
use predefined reports or, selecting from a large palette of
available options, they can create their own management
reports covering topics such as disk space utilization, the
configuration of user accounts and login scripts, analyzing
security profiles, and locating major security exposures on
the file server. (As with other elements of a report, the
definition of a "security exposure" can be defined by the
user.) For this reason, BindView+ has been adopted as the
standard security auditing tool by many LAN consultants,
Fortune 500 companies, and financial institutions, including
Coopers & Lybrand, CITIBANK, and Banker's Trust.
"We recently completed testing BindView+ and have
purchased it for use on our LANs," said Doug Hendrickson,
vice president of internal audit for Bankers Trust New York
Corporation. "We've found that BindView significantly
reduces the number of manhours needed to extract and analyze
data in the performance of LAN audits and it will soon
become the standard tool for such audits. Several reports
were custom-coded by the auditors to create a consistent set
of workpapers. BindView+ is easy to install, learn, and use
and is very flexible in its reporting capabilities."
--New Features--
BindView+ v3.0c offers several new features, including
NetWare 2.2 support, complete support for NetWare print
server information, new security auditing features, enhanced
accounting information, and the ability to group multiple
reports in a job that can be run from a batch file or can be
scheduled to execute at a specific day and time.
The new release also includes enhancements to the
standard output of reports to screen, file, printer, and
MHS. Also enhanced is the ability to export reports to
different file formats, including ASCII-fixed, ASCII-
delimited, DBF (dBase compatible) and WK1 (Lotus 1-2-3
compatible).
BindView+ is fully compatible with Novell's NetWare and
provides a seamless interface with the operating system. All
versions of NetWare are supported, and the product will soon
be on display in all Novell Demo Centers worldwide.
--Pricing and Availability--
BindView+ v3.0c is available for $395, which includes
system software, documentation, and a license to use the
product on one file server. Licenses to use the software to
run reports on additional file servers on the same local
network are available at $195 for each additional file
server. BindView+ v3.0c comes with an unconditional money-
back guarantee.
BindView+ v3.0c will begin shipping in October of 1991,
and will be available through an existing worldwide network
of LAN dealers or direct from The LAN Support Group.
